Second Dutch Conference on Integrative Psychiatry
In search of new possibilities
Home » Conference Integrative Psychiatry 2007
Integrative Medicine is: "The practice of medicine that reaffirms the importance of the therapeutic relationship between practitioner and patient, focuses on the whole person, is informed by evidence, and makes use of all appropriate approaches, healthcare professionals and disciplines to achieve optimal health and healing" (The Consortium, 2005).
Last year GGz Groningen organised the first congress on Integrative Psychiatry, which was an overwhelming success: more than 1000 participants, predominantly positive reactions, several reports in journals, on radio and television and many spin-off activities.
The theme "Integrative Psychiatry" is gaining interest as a topic of discussion on many levels of society. Contributing parties are increasingly inclined towards cooperation and integration, rather than polarisation and mutual exclusion. Many interesting scientific publications and a growing number of initiatives in the field of Integrative Medicine see the light. Sufficient reason to organise a second congress on Integrative Psychiatry.
Integrative Psychiatry integrates Complementary and alternative Medicine ( CAM) with Western Psychiatry on the basis of scientific research on safety and effectiveness. ( It involves an open attitude towards all methods of treatment (whether these are known as regular, complementary or alternative) and all therapeutic schools. ) In making a choice for a particular treatment the client’s frame of reference is of primary importance. The context of the therapeutic relationship and the (sub)cultures to which the client and the practitioner belong, are just as well to be taken into account as the available evidence for the various treatment options. Next to biological, psychological and social aspects, existential and spiritual concerns may become part of the treatment plan.
The central focus of this congress will be the search for and discussion of new solutions in the field of Integrative Psychiatry. The content covers a broad variety of interests:
- Theoretical background and epistemology of Integrative Psychiatry
- (Fundamental) scientific research into working mechanisms and efficacy of complementary and alternative methods of treatment
- The role of Integrative Psychiatry in contemporary society
- Experiential acquaintance with some interventions
During the congress one can be informed on Dutch initiatives in the field of Integrative Psychiatry by poster presentations. There will be live music in the foyer during breaks.
We hope to welcome you in Groningen on 9th of May 2007!
