Meditatie wordt in het Westen meestal gezien als een alternatieve geneeswijze. Alternatieve geneeswijzen worden ingedeeld in vijf groepen: biologisch, mind-body, energetisch, gehele systemen en lichaamsgericht (NCCAM, 2006). Meditatie valt in de groep Mind-Body. Volgens een klinische review van Astin en anderen (2003) is inmiddels duidelijk aangetoond dat Mind-Body interventies effectief zijn bij: coronaire hartziekten, hoofdpijn, inslaapstoornissen, incontinentie, chronische lage rugpijn, ziekte en behandelgerelateerde symptomen bij kanker en verbeteren van herstel na operaties.
Meditatie is een verzamelnaam voor een heel breed scala aan ontspannings en concentratieoefeningen. Zo zijn er vormen die gericht zijn op het beheersen van ademhaling, het plaatsen van het lichaam in bepaalde houdingen (yoga), het continue herhalen van bepaalde woorden of zinnen (mantra’s), het in gedachten voorstellen van bepaalde beelden (visualisaties), het trainen van de aandacht (mindfulness), het richten van de concentratie, bewustwording etc.
In het Tibetaans Boeddhisme komen al deze meditatievormen voor. Globaal wordt de meditatie onderverdeeld tussen soetra’s en tantra’s. Soetra’s worden wel het geleidelijke pad genoemd en tantra’s het snelle pad. De bekendste Tibetaanse tekst die verschillende vormen van soetra’s samenvat in een overzichtelijk geheel is "Liberation in the palm of your hand" van Pabongka Rinpoche. Op een soortgelijke wijze heeft Lama Gangchen Rinpoche alle tantrische meditatiebeoefeningen uit het Tibetaans boeddhisme samengevat in een korte meditatie die geschikt is voor Westerse beoefenaars, en dit heet Ngalso Tantrische Self Healing.
Lama Gangchen heeft deze meditatie samengesteld na een bezoek aan de Borobudur op Indonesië in 1992. Selfhealing is niet een persoonlijke creatie van Lama Gangchen maar een nieuwe vorm waarin de oude traditionele Tibetaanse leringen zijn samengevat in een moderne stijl, die geschikt is voor een breed publiek.
Naar Ngalso Tantric Selfhealing is nog geen wegenschappelijk effectonderzoek gedaan. Wel zijn er vele positieve casestudies en persoonlijke ervaringen. Velen hebben deze meditatie als dagelijkse beoefening in hun leven geïntegreerd. Er zijn momenteel ruim honderd meditatiegroepen over de wereld verspreid. Tijdens deze sessie zal Lama Ganchen ons uitleg geven en een eerste ervaring aanbieden op het gebied van Ngalso Tantric Selfhealing.
T.Y.S. Lama Gangchen Tulku Rinpoche is a Tibetan Lama Healer who lives in Italy and who works in different counties all over the world. He has extensive knowledge of (Tibetan) Buddhism and (Tibetan) Medicine. He is a professor and vice-chancellor of the Open University of Complementary Medicines, founded by the WHO in Alma Ata 1962. He also received degrees in Naturopathy (USA), Holistic Medicine (India), Science (Sri Lanka), Energy Medicine (USA) and Philosophy (Russia) from different universities throughout the world. He received many prices and (peace) awards for his work.
He was born on July 7, 1941 in Dakshu, a tiny village 40 kilometres from Shigaste in the Western Tibetan region of Tsang. Recognized at an early age as the reincarnation of the great healing lama Kacen Sapenla, he extensively studied the Tantra practices and secret healing methods under the guide of S.S. Trijang Dorje Chang and the venerable Zong Rinpoche. He entered the monastery at the age of five and from the Monastery of Tashi Lumpo in Tibet at the age of twelve, he received the title of "Kancen", a title which is usually conferred after twenty years of study. Up until 18 he studied medicine, astrology, meditation and philosophy in the most important monastic universities of Tibet: Sera Me and Tashi Lhunpo. After completing his studies by receiving the title of "Gheshe" (doctorate in philosophy) he worked as a lama healer in Nepal and India. During these years, he dedicated himself to curing the sick. While in Sikkim (India) he became the doctor of the royal family. In 1981 he began to travel throughout the world and he arrived in Europe teaching different Buddhist meditation practices like Tantric NgalSo Self-Healing, a method that helps recognize our real inner qualities and balance body, speech and mind.
He diffused teachings on inner peace education and environmental care. He promoted cooperation between the East and West and encouraged the diffusion of Himalayan culture and traditional medicine. He is responsible for over one hundred centres and associations in Europe, Asia, and America. In 1992 he instituted the Lama Gangchen World Peace Foundation, a non-governmental affiliate of the United Nations. The same year he founded the non-profit organization "Help in Action" with the aim of helping needy people in Tibet through long-distance adoptions. In 1995 he was the project planner for the institution of a Permanent Spiritual Forum at the United Nations, in which the representatives of all the spiritual and religious movements participated in order to contribute to the realisation of world peace.

Lama Michel Rinpoche born in 1981, has been recognized by Lama Gangchen and many great lamas as a Tulku – the reincarnation of a Tibetan Buddhist Master. He has chosen to be born in Brazil not only to benefit the whole country and South America, but the whole contemporary society.
At the age of twelve, Lama Michel decides to leave his 'normal life' in order to engage in a monastic life in the south of India. Presently he lives and works with Lama Gangchen Rinpoche in Albagnano (Italy)
